Search Montgomery County Inmate Records

Montgomery County inmate records are handled by the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation, a civilian agency, not a sheriff's jail. A Montgomery County inmate search does not run through a public website. Instead, the county directs the public to call the Inmate Records Section, which answers around the clock. People look up inmate records to confirm custody, find a facility, or arrange a visit. The county runs three sites, each with its own role and visiting rules. The sections here explain how the lookup works, what to have ready before you call, where each facility sits, and how visitation is scheduled.

Montgomery County Uses DOCR, Not a Sheriff Roster

Montgomery County is unusual. Custody is run by the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation, a civilian correctional agency set up in 1972. There is no sheriff-branded jail roster page. The official inmate search page says plainly that to locate someone incarcerated or detained in the county, you contact the DOCR Inmate Records Section. The agency is nationally recognized and holds multiple accreditations, including from the American Correctional Association and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

The official inmate search instructions are shown below.

The page makes clear that the phone line, not a web search box, is the official route.

Inmate Search Fields

Because the search is by phone, the fields are details you provide to staff rather than boxes on a form. The table below shows what to have ready and whether it is needed.

FieldTypeRequiredNotes
Inmate namePhone-providedYesFull legal name with correct spelling.
Date of birthPhone-providedRecommendedDistinguishes similar names.
Booking or date contextPhone-providedOptionalArrest date, agency, or court date can help.

Note: the county does not promise mugshots, booking numbers, charges, or housing units online, so confirm those by phone with Inmate Records.

Why Mugshots and Booking Profiles Are Not Online

Many counties post a searchable web roster with photos. Montgomery County does not, at least not in its official instructions. The agency directs the public to the phone line for current custody information instead. That keeps the data current and avoids the errors common to scraped third-party jail sites.

Because there is no official online profile, this page will not list fictional fields. What a caller can confirm is shown in the table below.

FieldWhat It Shows
Custody statusWhether the person is currently held.
FacilityWhich DOCR site holds the person.
Visiting eligibilityWhether visits are allowed and when.
Release statusWhether the person has been released or transferred.

Avoid third-party jail roster sites. They are not official and can be wrong about custody, charges, and release.

Montgomery County Jail Facilities

DOCR runs three sites, and each plays a different role. The Detention Center handles intake and is the 24-hour records point. The Correctional Facility houses eligible inmates and residents. Pre-Release and Reentry Services is the community-corrections side. The DOCR overview page is shown below.

Visiting a Montgomery County Inmate

Visitation runs on a modified schedule that resumed in 2022. It is based on housing dorms assigned to specific days on a rotating basis, and inmates get advance notice of their assigned dates. The schedule updates roughly every eight weeks, so always call the visiting desk before you arrive. The inmate and resident visiting page is shown below.

Under the modified schedule, an eligible inmate gets one 30-minute visit on the assigned date. Each inmate may have two visitors at a time, and one may be a minor child. Visitors must pass temperature screening and security, and must show a valid state photo ID or driver's license.

Note: If you believe an inmate may be suicidal or in a life-safety crisis, call 240-773-9704 and ask for a shift supervisor right away.

Visitor Rules and Identification

The visiting rules are firm, and knowing them ahead of time saves a wasted trip. Visitors go through screening, show ID, and follow a dress code. Anyone who does not meet the rules can be turned away at the desk.

  • Each inmate may have two visitors at a time, and one may be a minor child or infant.
  • Visitors under 18 must be with a parent or guardian.
  • A valid state photo ID or driver's license is required; a passport works if a second ID shows home residence.
  • All visitors pass temperature screening and security clearance before entry.
  • The dress code bars halter tops, see-through clothing, very short skirts, and other revealing attire.

Call the visiting desk before you arrive to confirm last-minute schedule changes. Inmates on restricted status are not eligible to receive visits.

Booking and Intake at MCDC

After an arrest, a person may be transported to the Montgomery County Detention Center for intake. Intake includes identity checks, a property inventory, medical and mental-health screening, and creation of a booking record. Bond and the timing of an initial appearance depend on the charge and Maryland criminal procedure.

This is why custody status can change fast in the first hours. Someone booked overnight may be released after an initial appearance, or held pending bond. Calling Inmate Records gives you the current status rather than a stale snapshot. The arrest records page explains how the charge then moves into the court system.

Video visitation is also available through a vendor system, with Montgomery County information posted on the DOCR visiting resources. On-site family visitation resumed under modified operations in 2022, and the two visit types run on separate schedules.

County Jail vs State and Federal Custody

The county jail is only one part of the system. People sentenced to longer terms move to state prison, and federal cases land in federal custody. Each level has its own lookup, so the right tool depends on where the person is held.

For state-sentenced people, use the Maryland DPSCS inmate locator. For federal custody, use the Bureau of Prisons locator. To get alerts when custody changes, use VINELink. All three, plus reentry resources, are covered on the released inmates page.

Knowing the level matters because the same person can move between systems over the life of a case. A pretrial detainee sits in the county jail. After sentencing on a serious charge, that person may transfer to a Maryland state facility. The county phone line can often tell you when a transfer has happened so you know where to search next.

About the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation

DOCR describes itself as a civilian agency managed by correctional professionals. Its stated mission is to protect the public through professional correctional services for pretrial and convicted detainees, to run secure and humane facilities, and to reduce reincarceration through self-improvement opportunities. The agency reports continuous accreditation by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care since 1978, along with recognition from the American Correctional Association and the Maryland Commission on Correctional Standards.

That history matters for record seekers. It signals a structured, standards-driven system where custody data is tracked carefully and released through official channels rather than an open web roster. The Pre-Release and Reentry Services program is a notable piece of that system. Federal officials recognized it as an Exemplary Project back in 1977, and it remains the county's core reentry component. More on reentry is on the released inmates page.

Jail Population and Data

DOCR also publishes a data dashboard with information about the jail system. It is the official source for population context rather than name-by-name lookups. The dashboard page is shown below.

For capacity, average daily population, and demographic context, see the inmate population page. To trace an inmate's case, the arrest records and court records pages connect custody to the court file. Together, those pages let you move from a custody check to the full case history, and from there to bond, hearings, and disposition.
